Dominican Republic cabinet minister killed in office

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Cabinet Minister of the Dominican Republic, Orlando Jorge Mera, 55, was hosting a meeting when he was shot and killed today.

Officials say that Mera was killed by Miguel Cruz, a close personal friend. Cruz is reportedly in custody and the motive of the shooting remains unclear.

Mera’s family issued a statement confirming that he sustained multiple shots by a man that he was friends with since childhood.

“Our family forgives the person who did this. One of Orlando’s greatest legacies was to not hold grudges,” they said.

Mera served in incumbent President Luis Abinader’s administration since they won in July 2020.

Several of his colleagues have extended sympathies.

Mera was the son of former President Salvador Jorge-Blanco and a founding member of the governing Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
