Policewoman faces internal charges after challenging Minister Julius Espat

Posted: Monday, June 6, 2022. 3:15 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A cop from Belmopan has run afoul of her own Department after a confrontation yesterday, Sunday, with Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat during village council elections.

The officer was supporting her husband in the election under a United Democratic Party banner; Minister Espat, of course, is a People’s United Party grandee.

The incident was recorded live as it happened but the Commissioner cited regulations that explicitly prohibit police officers from engaging in political campaigns for a party.

Commissioner Chester Williams distinguished the case from that of Senior Superintendent of Police Daniel Arzu, who is headed into retirement and seeking to become chairman of the village council of Georgetown, Stann Creek District, as an independent.

Whether or not he succeeds, he has not taken sides and in any event, is on his way out.

As for the woman Police officer, her case is before the Professional Standards Branch of the Department.
