By BBN Staff: A pair of Belize City men were arrested and charged over the weekend for possession of suspected cocaine.
Tour guide Damion Cattouse, 39, and businessman Zane Galvez, 32, appeared in Belize City Magistrate’s Court unrepresented on Monday on two charges of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply to another.
Cattouse and Galvez were arrested on Saturday night following a vehicular search at the Mile 4 checkpoint on the George Price Highway. According to police, cops noticed a strong aroma of marijuana coming from a black Honda Pilot and ordered passengers to exit the car.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a black plastic bag found in the front driver’s side door which contained a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. Police report that’s when the driver, Cattouse told them “This is only my baking powder, that dah nothing.”
Cattouse and Galvez were cautioned by police, placed under arrest, and escorted to the Racoon Street Police Station where police claim a further search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two small transparent plastic bags which were stapled together in a brown paper bag and contained a white powdery substance police suspect to be cocaine. The first bag found weighed a total of 6 grams and the second amount weighed a total of 16 grams.
In court, the men maintained their innocence and attempted to address the court to request that the substance be tested. The magistrate explained the procedure took time and with that, they were granted bail in the sum of $3,000 each which they were able to meet. They are due back in court on the matter in August. Outside court, Galvez said he believed it was unfair to be charged for a substance that hadn’t been tested. A test on the suspected substance has not yet been completed.
