Large migrant caravan heads for U.S. border as Summit of Americas starts

Posted: Tuesday, June 7, 2022. 9:59 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Thousands of migrants reportedly left Tapachula, Mexico on Monday with hopes of reaching the United States and timing their journey to coincide with the Summit of the Americas this week, Reuters report.

Several activists say this could be the largest group in recent years.

The organizer of the caravan, Luis Garcia Villagran said the migrants represented various nationalities of people fleeing hardship in their home countries, many of them from Venezuela.

Villagran says that the migrants’ home countries are collapsing from poverty and violence.

“We strongly urge those who attend the summit … to look at what is happening, and what could happen even more often in Mexico, if something is not done soon,” he added.

Among the many important issues to be discussed at the Summit of the Americas are migration and the increasing amount of people fleeing their home countries in Central America.

In 2021, a record number of migrants tried to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.
