Minor claims police brutality in Orange Walk

Posted: Tuesday, June 7, 2022. 12:36 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A 16-year-old student from Orange Walk Town is claiming police brutality.

In a video published by Attorney Marcel Cardona, the minor said that he was taken into police custody, handcuffed, and kicked twice in his stomach.

“ I was brought to Mr. Reyes’s office, he had me handcuffed, he made me kneel down and he kicked me twice. They had another police in there that punched me. They took off my phone and opened it without my consent,” he said.

The minor was reportedly detained around 10:30 am and says that at the time of the recording which was 5 pm, he hadn’t been given anything to eat.

In the video, Cardona said that it is illegal to have someone detained and not provide the basic necessities such as water and food.

The minor is requesting medical attention because he says he still has pain from the injuries he sustained.

Cardona is calling on the Commissioner of Police and Minister Kareem Musa to investigate this latest incident of police brutality.
