By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson has survived a vote of confidence by his own party.
On Monday, members of his party voted in secret ballots to allow Johnson to remain as party leader and PM of the United Kingdom.
The votes were 211 to 148 for allowing Johnson to remain as party leader.
Johnson said that the results were “convincing” and “decisive.”
Media reports stated that Johnson’s supporters are looking at spinning the results as a victory or deciding what will be their next move as Johnson’s leadership looks shakier than ever.
The vote was triggered by 54 letters of no confidence that had been submitted to the Chairman of the 1922 Committee of MPs. The MP is a committee of all backbench Conservative MPs that meets weekly when the Commons is sitting.
Johnson now hopes that the country will move on from the ‘partygate scandal’, in which Johnson was found to be the first British Prime Minister to have broken the law while in office.
The ‘partygate’ scandal involved parties/ gatherings held that violated COVID-19 lockdown rules hence the name ‘partygate’.
