Week of activities celebrating 10,000 years of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System being held

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA) is holding a week of activities celebrating 10,000 years of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System

“In 1996 the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System was declared a World Heritage Site due to its outstanding universal value and it has been with us for a long time giving food, giving joy, giving life,” says a video promoting the 10,000 years of the Belize Barrier Reef.

The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA) said the activities are being held at different locations within coastal Belize.

To start the week-long Belize Barrier Reef 10K Celebrations, last Friday June 3, the MBECA team along with the World Wildlife Fund hosted a gala entitled ‘A Night Under the Sea’ for stakeholders and invited guests.

Taiwan Ambassador David Kuan-Chou Chien who was one of the invited guests said he was delighted to be invited to the Opening Ceremony of Belize Barrier Reef 10,000th Birthday.

“As the Government of Belize is dedicating to the protection and conservation of Belize Barrier Reef which plays extremely important key role in the sustainable development of Belize and the global community, the Embassy is proud to sponsor this meaningful event and looks forward to continuing to work with the Government of Belize in the oceanic conservation and blue economy fields,” said the Taiwan Embassy.

The celebrations continue on Wednesday in Belize City .

“The MBECA team along with World Wildlife Fund invites the general public to attend this year’s World Oceans Day Expo 2022, under the theme ‘Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean’,” said the Ministry.

The World Oceans Day Expo 2022 at Buttonwood Bay Park starts at 9:00 am and runs until 3:00 pm.

“Learn more about the importance of the second largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and let’s conserve it for the benefit of our families and future generations!” said WWW Mesoamerica.
