Commuters: Water taxi fares are “too high”

Posted: Wednesday, June 8, 2022. 10:51 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Commuters to the islands of San Pedro and Caye Caulker are feeling the pinch in their pockets as the water taxi fares to those two destinations have increased.

A roundtrip ticket from Belize City to San Pedro was $55 and now it is $79 while a 1-way ticket to San Pedro from Belize City is $43.

The price for a round trip ticket to Caye Caulker was $37 and it is now $61.

During an interview with the media this week, Ports Commissioner, Gilbert Swaso said that the water taxis had officially requested an increase in passenger fares and it was approved as a fuel surcharge.

“So those new rates include the fuel surcharge which is a floating sur-charge. [It] simply means then that if the price of fuel were to drop or decrease then certainly a new passenger rate based on the new price decrease will definitely decrease the passenger fare,” Swaso said.

Several commuters have commented on Facebook that the new prices are too high.
