Director of Public Prosecutions to determine if child’s poisoning was genuine mistake or negligence

By Aaron Humes: Two-year-old Melanie Santos has apparently managed to survive her contact with Lannate insecticide, spread on a piece of bread and intended to catch rats.

But police continue their investigations into a potential crime despite knowing, as Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told reporters on Monday, “…that as a family, they have suffered enough, having to see their child going through what the child went through as a result of what had happened. And, we really have to put a bit of humanity in how we approach the situation. I certainly would not want to see the parents having to go through another situation with this. It certainly is going to be hard on them.”

The betting at this point, according to the Commissioner, lies with either a “genuine mistake” on the part of the parents or negligence.

But the person with the ultimate determination is the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions: “…what we are doing is putting the file together and then we’re going to send it to the DPP’s office for guidance in terms of where we go. It is not a matter for us to decide. Again, it’s a complex issue, and where we have complex issues, we would normally defer to the DPP for guidance.”
