Happy World Oceans Day! How are you celebrating?

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being celebrated as World Oceans Day. The day is being observed under the theme “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.”

To commemorate World Oceans Day, Oceana Belize unveiled its newest Public Service Announcement (PSA) featuring local professionals and leaders coming together, to encourage everyone to take action and get involved to save our seas.

“It’s easy to think of oceans as wild, boundless, & unchanging, but that is far from the truth. Today, oceans are being seriously threatened by overfishing, pollution, climate change, and more,” Oceana said.

“ The ocean connects us, the ocean feeds us and the ocean feels us. But the ocean needs us to stop all the damage. There is no economy without ecosystems,” the Oceana statement asserted.

According to the United Nations, the ocean covers over 70% of the planet and it is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

Globally, Oceana has won over 225 victories to protect and restore the world’s oceans, but there’s still so much more that needs to be done.
