Ministry of Health & Wellness says “no hustling” on fees for COVID-19 tests

Posted: Wednesday, June 8, 2022. 8:12 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: According to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, only unvaccinated persons who fail to submit a negative COVID-19 test result are required to be tested before entering Belize.

It has been characterized as “misleading” reports that people are being “hustled” for fees for tests done at the land borders, which re-opened earlier this year.

In a statement the Ministry explained the procedure: once tested, the test-taker must pay the cashier at the office on weekdays and on weekends and holidays, a temporary handwritten receipt is provided and persons are asked to return the following workday for their official receipt.

“Regular reconciling and auditing of all test kits and receipts are done by respective regional finance officers countrywide. The ministry encourages the public to request a copy of their government receipt when conducting any government business,” the Ministry concludes.

More than half a million persons – Belizean and foreign – have been tested for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020.
