Negotiations on Commercial Agreement between BSI/ASR and Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association continue

Posted: Wednesday, June 8, 2022. 2:55 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes, Independence, Stann Creek District: While he was not able to share details, Vice President of International Relations for BSI/ASR told reporters that negotiations continue between the millers and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) for a new commercial agreement.

Mac Maclachlan reiterated that unity in the industry is key to consolidating the gains the industry has made in the last few years and avoiding backsliding to the way things were before.

The Association has asked for a fairer share of cane prices, bagasse prices, and input on other critical issues.

An extension to the time for negotiation, through the end of April, is now expired though the two sides continue to operate under the terminated agreement.
The Association was represented at today’s event in the South by Chairman Andy Westby and long-standing leader Alfredo Ortega among others.

Members of the Association still face a lawsuit for December’s disruption to the crop from power-generation arm of BSI/ASR, the Belize Co-Generation Energy Limited (BELCOGEN).
