Port of Big Creek steps up to accommodate major exports

By Aaron Humes: As Managing Director of the Big Creek Port Group of Companies, Zaid Flores told us, today is Belize Sugar Industries Limited’s day.

But the Port must be credited with a huge assist, namely its decision to create the deepest water Port in Belize, of similar depth to Guatemala.

The ship in port taking on sugar today measures 180 meters and can load 300 tons of sugar an hour; even larger ships take on bananas on the other side of the Port compound.

Flores said the investment will help Belize’s industries compete with the region and eliminate bottlenecks that have hurt productivity and the bottom line.
