Sugar crop going well despite recent weather halt

By Aaron Humes, Independence, Stann Creek District: According to Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR), some 920 thousand tons of sugar cane have been milled, producing more than 60 thousand tons of sugar.

The industry is on track for another successful season according to Vice President Mac Maclachlan, though he noted there was a recent pause due to the early arrival of the rainy season.

Nonetheless, he paid tribute to the determination of farmers, mill, and government to get the cane in, and stated that when all parts of the industry click – farms, mill, logistics, and markets – King Sugar is still number one.

However, in the long-term BSI aims to continue improvements in the mill and on the logistical and market side, focusing on its traditional markets of the European Union, Caribbean, and United States.
