Tracey Taegar Panton comes out in defense of Alberto August

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The village council elections have turned into a political hotbed and things got really hot in Teakettle over the weekend.

United Democratic Party (UDP) Albert Representative Tracey Taegar Panton has come out in defense of UDP Vice-Chairman Alberto August who found himself in a tussle with a PUP woman supporter just like Minister Julius Espat with a UDP woman supporter though the circumstances were different.

“We were at the gate in Teakettle village greeting voters as they arrived to cast their ballots. I was engaged with Julius Espat in the usual manner as we do for elections,” said August to 7 News Belize.

“I was asking him to rescind the village taxes and to lower the price of fuel in line with the posters I held. When, at one point, I gave a half turn and this woman pushed one of the posters I held against me causing it to come in contact with the left side of my face. The police who witnessed the assault immediately intervened and thankfully held me back otherwise the outcome could have been quite different.”

“The intent, of course, was obviously to get me to commit myself and to put me out of commission for the day.”

“Alberto August is a Five-Star General of our great United Democratic Party. He has always been willing to stand on the front line and fight for the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Belizean People; and, in or out of office, he continues to fight for and defend the UDP,” said UDP Albert Representative Tracy Taegar Panton in a social media post in which she said the gender-based violence continues to be ever-present and needs to stops but also said she is aware that ‘mischief makers’ are paid to provoke situations.

“While I was not in Teakettle on Sunday, from all accounts it was a very boisterous day. I will never condone or accept acts of aggression against any individual. I have been a victim myself of an abusive, offensive, blatantly disrespectful verbal assault by the Hon Jose Aberlado [sic] Mai in the National Assembly of Belize just last week,” said Taegar Panton.

“Gender-based violence continues to be very prevalent in our society and it needs to stop. The onus is on all of us to lead by example. I am, though, weary of the paid mischief-makers whose only job it is to provoke others to anger for the sake of political expediency. Fear and Intimidation Tactics have NO place in the governing of our villages, municipalities, and our country. There is a reason why the Village Council Elections were not meant to be politicized,” said Taegar Panton.
