U.S. Secretary of State warns of threat to Freedom of the Press in several Latin American countries

Posted: Wednesday, June 8, 2022. 8:39 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken shared concerns about efforts being made to suppress Freedom of the Press in several Latin American countries.

During an address at a press freedom event, Blinken said that the United States seeks to increase media protection in the region.

In addition, Blinken said that in countries such as Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, the act of independent journalism constituted a crime there. Notably, the governments of these 3 countries were excluded from the Summit of the Americas being held in Los Angeles this week.

“No region in the world is more dangerous for journalists,” Blinken said.

He noted that 17 media workers have been killed this year in the Western Hemisphere, citing the UNESCO observatory for killed journalists.
