Women in Tourism Caribbean highlights Leisa Carr- Caceres of Belize

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Women in Tourism Caribbean highlights ‘WOW’ women that have impacted the tourism industry across the Caribbean.

This week’s highlight is on Leisa Carr-Caceres, an adopted daughter of Belize.

Caceres’ family began their new life on a beautiful but wild, cattle ranch in the heart of Belize near Belmopan in the 70s.

Tourism was non-existent on the mainland at that time, but the family decided to start a jungle lodge and offer jungle horseback riding to the few and far between adventurous guests in the mid-’80s.

At that time reservations were received by snail mail, guide books, and word of mouth only.

Growing up in the adventure travel environment seeded a deep passion in Leisa for the industry and her participation in supporting and assisting in any way has been ongoing for as long as she can remember.

Leisa has seen Belize tourism grow in leaps and bounds and has been instrumental with private and public sector projects as a Board member of the Belize Hotel Association of which she was also President for 3 years.

She has also been a mentor for several young entrepreneurs including a program for women WEAmericas.

Leisa began a Horse Camp in 2006 and has gone from doing one camp a year to 10 camps last year.

Horse Camp provides an opportunity for anyone to not only learn about horses but to conquer fears and face realities that can turn into life lessons.

Leisa also is a self-taught stained glass artist. Her work can be seen in most of the prominent churches, businesses, and resorts.
