By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Football Team was expected to gain seven points from the 12 in play these two weeks in the Concacaf Nations League. Now only six are left to play for and those two games are against the strongest team in the group, French Guiana both here at home today at 4:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan and in French Guiana next Tuesday.

French Guiana have won both their first two games, dropping Guatemala 2-0 in Cayenne and the Dominican Republic 3-2 in Santo Domingo. Guatemala and the Dominican Republic have both won their games over Belize. So, at this point, we are at the bottom of Group B with the great possibility of finishing in that position at the end of the double round robin next March and dropping to League C.

Only good results against French Guiana, a win and/or a draw, and subsequent good showing against both the Dominican Republic and Guatemala in March next year will help our team to avert that situation. While Belize have a number of players who ply their trade outside the country, the majority of French Guiana starters do so in France. That plus the way they’ve been playing gives the French Guiana side the edge.

But BMNT are playing at home today, so, let’s hope that’s good for something because our men need to turn things around. And it’s not like they can’t do it. A good result today can work wonders for the team’s morale looking forward to the upcoming games.

So, the BMNT have their work cut out today and Tuesday when they play the return match at 1:00 pm at the Stade Dr. Edmard Lama in Cayenne.

Meanwhile, the other two group members, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala play on Friday at 5:00 pm at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in San Cristóbal outside Santo Domingo. Their return match will be at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium in Guatemala City at 6:00 pm on Monday, June 13.

Coach David Pérez made four changes to the lineup against Guatemala. Today he has to make more changes as Jose Urbina abandoned the field with a hamstring injury on Sunday and was replaced by Norman Anderson. Urbina won’t be able to line up today. In the previous game, Tony Rocha had to be subbed because of injury. If he has recovered, Rocha should be back today. If not, expect the following lineup: Charles Tillett in goal; Norman Anderson, Eugene Martinez, DeShawon Nembhard, and Everal Trapp in defence; Darrell Myvett, Nana Mensah, Angelo Capello, and Krisean Lopez in the midfield; and Deon McCaulay and Carlos Bernárdez as forwards.

On the bench: goalkeepers Isaac Castillo and Earl Dyck; defenders Jose Urbina, Aaron Lopez, and Donell Arzu; midfielders Horace Avila, Jovaunn Ramos, Warren Moss, Tony Rocha, Eldon Reneau, and Luis Torres; and forward Jesse August.
