By Aaron Humes: Aaron Chavez, 18, of West Collet Canal, has been accused for the third time in recent months of taking what does not belong to him.
This time the victim is professional photographer, filmmaker and former television news camera operator, Alexander “Alex” Ellis of Belmopan.
Ellis and girlfriend Kimberly Bowman reported to police that on June 3 they had parked his Nissan Rogue SUV in front of a Regent Street West address and went out to do business in town for about 20 minutes. When they returned to the vehicle, Bowman was called by an unidentified female saying that she had found her pink purse on the other side of town on Richard Street.
They got the purse back but did not realize that his Think Tank bag valued at $480 and containing the Panasonic Lumix GHT camera valued at $4,470 and other assorted equipment was also missing. Initial canvassing for surveillance footage proved fruitless as businesses in the area were already closed.
However, police investigations led them to Chavez, who was refused bail on the primary basis of having two previous charges for robbery and theft before the courts. The prosecutor persuaded the Magistrate that the father of one with another child on the way may commit another offence if let out on bail in the first instance.
Chavez denied the charge, saying he was being framed, but he was remanded until July 25.
On the unrelated charges, he returns to court on July 5 and August 31, respectively.
