By Aaron Humes: Emmerson Copious, 25, accused of common assault on his former partner, took back his initial guilty plea in court after finding that the facts of the case did not match his view of events.
Copius told Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson that he knew the wrong he had done, but disagreed with the way it was told to police by his ex.
She claims that while at the Pound Yard area talking to a taxi driver, Copious approached and threatened to “burst yuh throat” with a knife if he had one, adding that she was “taking him lightly,” then allegedly began to choke her.
The Senior Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf and offered bail of $1,000 subject to stringent conditions. Copious must stay away from the complainant at a distance of 100 yards; not contact her or family members directly or indirectly, including by text message or social media platforms.
Copious is remanded pending security of bail until July 15.
