Leader of Mexican Church is sentenced to 16 years for child sex abuse

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The leader of a Mexico-based evangelical megachurch pled guilty to felony counts of sexually abusing three children and has been sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in a U.S. prison.

The self-styled apostle, Nasson Joaquin Garcia of the Guadalajara-based church La Luz del Mundo (Light of the World) was sentenced this week in a Los Angeles Courtroom.

Just 3 days before he was due to stand trial, Garcia pled guilty to felony counts of sex crimes against children, including multiple charges of rape, conspiracy to engage in human trafficking, and child pornography.

The church publicly stated its support for Garcia saying that their confidence in him remains intact with full knowledge of “his integrity, his conduct, and his work.”

In addition, the statement said that Garcia accepted a plea deal because he believed he could not get a fair trial, and that evidence in the case “had been “suppressed, withheld, doctored and altered.”

La Luz del Mundo is the largest evangelical church in Mexico with branches in 50 countries and about 5 million members.
