Softball community mourns passing of pitcher Lanisha Jones

Posted: Friday, June 10, 2022. 1:27 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Lanisha was one of the best pitchers to ever take the field at Rogers Stadium and hit the league by storm at a very young age,” said the Belize City Softball Association (BCSA) in a social media post.

Lanisha Jones was a very prominent pitcher from Georgeville in the Cayo District. She passed away on Thursday at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City at age 35. Breaking Belize News understands Lanisha was suffering from lupus.

“She was a Belize City Champion, National Champion, Belize City MVP, Nationals MVP and Ace of the Belize U-19 and Women National Team,” said the BCSA.

President of the Belize Softball Federation Jude Lizama confirmed that Lanisha played in the Cayo Competition for the Esperanza Wolverines under Louis Ortega in 2004. She also played in the National Secondary Schools Association Championship in 2004. The following year she played for the Belize Under 19 National Team in the Central American Championship in El Salvador. Lanisha then moved up to the Senior National Women’s Team with whom she played for several years. Lanisha travelled to Puerto Rico in 2013 when Belize last competed internationally, said Lizama.

“Even as her health declined, Lanisha was a regular at Rogers Stadium with an unlimited supply of positive energy to spread around,” said the BCSA.

“We express our deepest condolences to our sister Lisa Jones and the family. We join members of CTC, Lady Rebels, Bandits and her Beacon family in covering Lanisha’s son and loved ones in prayers.

“Lanisha was one of the best on and off the field. You will be dearly missed,” closed the BCSA.

“Bandits Sports is saddened by the loss of Lanisha Monique Jones, our sister in Softball,” said the Belmopan Bandits.

“You always wore a smile despite all the battles. Your smile and passion for life will always be remembered. You were and will always be a symbol of strength. We express our deepest condolences to her family. The Softball family has lost a great one. Your Bandits Softball Family will miss you tremendously.”

But while she played softball, Lanisha was a follower of national football champions, Verdes.

“Join us in remembering one of our biggest fans as she moves on to a better place of rest and peace. With saddened hearts and lots of love we will always remember lanisha. She was and will always be VERDES FOR LIFE!” said Verdes on social media.

“You always wore a smile despite all the battles you were fighting. Now you no longer have to fight and can now Rest In Peace, but your smile and the passion for which you lived life will always be remembered,” said the Beacon Softball Club.

“Your softball family will miss you tremendously Lanisha. We are at a loss for words, this hurts!!”
