By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States will no longer require international travelers to take a COVID-19 test one day before traveling to the United States, according to an Associated Press report.
AP cites a senior US administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the official announcement.
After the United States lifted a travel ban restricting people from several countries from entering, it instituted the requirement that a person had to be fully vaccinated to be allowed entry. Additionally, people were required to have a COVID-19 test within three days of travel. Persons who were not fully vaccinated had to present a COVID-19 test taken within one-day of travel.
Due to the highly contagious Omicron virus, last November the requirement became a COVID-19 test taken within one day for all.
Now, however, the consideration by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is that the COVID-19 test is no longer necessary. The official told AP that the COVID-19 testing mandate will expire on Sunday at 12:01 am, but CDC reserves the right to reinstate the mandate within 90 days if necessary.
While it will no longer require the COVID-19 test, the official said the CDC will continue recommending that people do COVID-19 testing prior to any air travel as a safety precaution.
