128 teams competing for 40 scholarships and $20,000 in cash prizes in National Basketball Tournament organized by National Sports Council

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Sports Council is organizing a National Basketball Tournament which features 128 teams in six different categories and is being played in ten zones including all the cities and towns, plus Independence.

So, that’s in Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize City, San Pedro, Belmopan, San Ignacio/Santa Elena, Benque Viejo del Carmen, Dangriga, Independence, and Punta Gorda.

According to National Sports Coordinator Kaya Cattouse, the winner of each category at the zone level will qualify to the National Tournament to be held in Belize City on August 6-7.

The categories are: U15 Girls, U18 Women, Open Women, U15 Boys, U18 Men, Open Men.

“Prizes for the champions of the U15 and U18 are one year school scholarships,” said Cattouse.

“That’s 40 scholarships total for 20 female athletes and 20 male athletes. While the champions of the Open competitions receive $10,000 cash prize in both the female and male categories.”

Cattouse said the NSC is supporting the development of the sport.

“The format of this competition was specifically set to include 2 younger age categories to support the development of Basketball in the country. We have also provided jerseys for all of the 128 registered teams with the help of Ahmadiyya. The National Sports Council and the Ministry of Sports plans to continue this tournament every summer here after,” said Cattouse.

The zone tournaments are all being inaugurated on Saturday, except Punta Gorda and Independence which started on Friday and San Pedro which will happen later.

The NSC said the official opening ceremonies across the country are taking place as follows:

1. Punta Gorda at the Punta Gorda Sports Auditorium (Fri. 10 June 2022) 4:00 p.m.

2. Independence at the Triangle Park (Fri. 10 June 2022) 6:00 p.m.

3. Orange Walk at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex (Sat. 11 June 2022) 6:00 p.m.

4. Dangriga at the Russell “Chiste” Gracia Auditorium (Sat. 11 June 2022) 2:00 p.m.

5. Corozal at the Andres Campos Civic Center (Sat. 11 June 2022) 3:00 p.m.

6. San Ignacio/Santa Elena/Benque at the Victor Galvez Stadium (Sat. 11 June 2022) 1:00 p.m.

7. Belmopan at the Hilltop Complex (Sat. 11 June 2022) 3:00 p.m.

8. Belize City at the Mexico Sports Complex (Sat. 11 June 2022) 1:50 p.m.

9. San Pedro at the San Pedro H.S. Auditorium (date to be announced)
