TikTok adds new options for users to ‘take a break’

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Social media giant, TikTok is planning to introduce new features to its app to encourage users to take a break from endlessly scrolling videos on their platform.

The announcement comes amidst public calls to tech companies to address excessive social media usage.

Users of the popular dancing app will be able to set custom time limits for how much uninterrupted time they want to spend using the app, before getting a reminder to take a break.

“These prompts will remind people to take a break after a certain amount of uninterrupted screen time, which they can set as they choose,” Jordan Furlong, a product manager of digital well-being at TikTok, said.

In addition, a screen time dashboard will give users information on how much time they are spending on the app.

Teens between the ages of 13-17 will be issued with “digital well-being prompts” when they have used the app for more than 100 minutes in 1 day.

There has been mounting public pressure on social media companies to do more to help users’ well-being in the digital age since many discuss social media platforms’ mental health impacts on younger users.
