By Aaron Humes: 20-year-old Bjarne Gabourel of BDF Housing Site, Lords’ Bank, Belize District, has been charged with wounding stepfather Lionel Cuthkelvin, 44, retired Belize Defence Force officer, during an argument over a Bluetooth speaker on Wednesday night.
Gabourel, represented by attorney Norman Rodriguez, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday afternoon. He was offered and met bail of $1,000.
The court ordered as part of conditions to bail that he is not allowed to contact his stepfather, the complainant, either in person or via text or social media. They live in separate houses across from each other.
Cuthkelvin told police that he was at home with his wife, Bjarne’s mother, and their children when he came by asking to borrow the speaker. When Cuthkelvin said no, Bjarne left upset and soon thereafter was heard quarrelling with other relatives.
Despite his mother’s interventions, the quarrel escalated to the alleged use of obscene language and when Cuthkelvin himself stepped in, he found himself facing a knife with which he was cut on the chest, having partially turned it away from his stomach.
