By BBN Staff: Twenty-three-year-old Benyahti Jareal Brandon appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, charged with one count each of wounding, aggravated assault, and use of deadly means of harm.
No plea was taken from him due to the nature of his offenses, but his attorney, Norman Rodriguez, noted that the offenses could be tried as either indictable matters or summary matters, and asked the court to consider charging him summarily.
When the prosecution objected to bail, Rodriguez noted that Brandon was once a crown witness and assisted in putting two men behind bars for murder. Rodrigez argued that this fact put Brandon in peril if he is remanded.
Despite the defense’s protest, Brandon was remanded until July 28. The Magistrate told his attorney that she will write a letter to the prison and urge them to take special measures to ensure his safety, but also warned she does not control what happens in jail.
Brandeon stands accused of a shooting that occurred on April 16 in La Democracia Village.
