American child tourist apparently drowns after being trapped in Rio On Pools

By Aaron Humes: Eight-year-old Cerys MacTaggart of Boise, Idaho, United States, apparently drowned on a visit to the Rio On Pools on Sunday afternoon, police report.

Cerys’ father Joshua, his wife and her older brothers were on vacation and came to San Ignacio to visit the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve and the Rio Frio Caves.

On Sunday morning the family were permitted to swim in the Rio On Pools, with the boys in one pool and the rest in the other taking pictures. Joshua said he missed when Cerys left from next to them but after five minutes realized she was not there and began searching fruitlessly for her.

A wider search party was established and approximately an hour later, she was found trapped inside a hole between the middle and lower pool by divers. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful and she was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead just before 7 p.m. Police are investigating.
