By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Bureau of Standards held an accreditation virtual conference on the occasion of World Accreditation Day last Thursday with the support of Citrus Products of Belize Ltd., Running W Brand Meats, and Marie Sharp’s.

The conference which was entitled Accreditation: Sustainability in Economic Growth and the Environment (the theme of World Accreditation Day), was held with the goal of promoting the value of accreditation.

“Accreditation of conformity assessment services helps to ensure that compliance of products, services, and systems necessary for supporting our as necessary for supporting a sustainable and healthy environment,” said Jose Trejo, the Belize Bureau of Standards Director.

“We know the challenges for the environment are very numerous, Accreditation can help to reduce the human impact on the environment as we strive toward achieving the sustainable development goals of clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent organic economy, and growth industry innovation, etcetera.”

Trejo warned that it’s a difficult journey as our economies must grow while maintaining quality and environmental standards that are required worldwide in a circular economy.

“It’s a challenge when we as a country are balancing both economy and environment. It’s a challenge but we hope that quality infrastructure will have its rightful place in assisting us as a country to ensure that we have these systems in place,”

“Our economies must grow. We must have the most produce. We must seek export markets. We must do everything necessary to ensure that we achieve certain levels of productivity, but it cannot be at the expense of the environment. And we are hoping that systems like these will help us to put a gauge on how best we can manage both and have some harmony in addressing economic challenges and environmental challenges.”

The virtual workshop reviewed the accreditation framework, and the importance of environmental management. Additionally, it also looked at industry perspectives which includes the implementation of Energy Management Systems (EMS), the pursuit of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Certification, and the accessing global markets with the use of standards.

Citrus Products of Belize Ltd. presented the EMS implementation, Running W Brand Meats reviewed the HACCP Certification, and Marie Sharp’s at the accessing of global markets.
