China warns the US that efforts to seek Taiwan’s Independence could cause war; Belize maintains support for Taiwan’s sovereignty

By BBN Staff: According to the BBC, China has warned the United States that any effort for Taiwan to seed independence could prompt military action.

Chinese Defence Minister, Wei Fenghe says that efforts in separating Taiwan from China could leave the Chinese military with no other choice but to fight at any cost.

US official Lloyd Austin said that Chinese military activity near Taiwan was provocative and undermined peace and stability in the region. Austin also stated that the US is committed to maintaining the status quo- recognizing Beijing as the sole government of China and opposing Taiwan’s Independence. The officials met at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Asia.

Last month, Taiwan said that it deployed fighter jets after China sent 30 warplanes into its air defence zone. Reports noted that it marked the biggest Chinese incursion since January.

While the US maintains the one China policy, Belize recognizes Taiwan’s sovereignty as an independent nation and maintains strong diplomatic ties with the island state. In addition, Belize supports the integration of Taiwan in various international organization and supports recognition of Taiwan as an sovereign nation by other countries.
