Escapee Aaron Chavez claims he was released from handcuffs and pushed out of prison van

By BBN Staff: Eighteen-year-old Aaron Chavez, who was recently wanted by police for escaping from prison transport, claimed in court on Monday that he did not willingly escape from the police van taking him to the Belize Central Prison, but rather, he was pushed out.

Chavez appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today where he wasted no time in pleading guilty to the charge of escaping lawful custody.

He disputed his age in court, saying that he was 17 and not 18, though the court records have him listed as 18. He also told the court that he had no intention of escaping, but that it was the two men he was handcuffed with who were planning to escape.

Chavez said that they managed to free him from his handcuffs and told him to escape with them. He said he was only faking that he would escape, when the men pushed him from the window. He then called his girlfriend who later picked him up and told him to surrender himself to police over the weekend.

For his guilty plea, he was sentenced to 5 months in prison.

The escape happened on Thursday, June 9, after Chavez was denied bail on a charge of theft, because he had two previous pending matters before the court, for which he was out on bail.
