Rio On Pools claims life of 6-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl this weekend; both children of tourists

By Hugh O’Brien: The Rio On Pools in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve claimed the life of two (2) persons, both young children of tourists, this weekend.

On Saturday, 6-year-old Isaac Pipersburgh was with his family bathing in the pools when he jumped off a rock into the water and drowned shortly after. Pipersburgh was with his family visiting Belize and the family will now have to return to the United States without their loved one.

The second incident occurred on Sunday and claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl, Cerys MacTaggart of Idaho, United States. On Sunday morning the MacTaggart family went to swim in the Rio On Pools, and they left the two older boys in one pool while the rest of the family was in the other pool taking pictures. That was when Cerys left from next to them and was later found trapped inside a hole between the middle and lower pool by divers. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful and she was later pronounced dead at the San Ignacio Hospital.

Both the Pipersburgh and MacTaggart families were staying in San Ignacio when they decided to visit the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve and bathe in the often visited Rio On Pools.

In a release sent out earlier today, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, under which the Forestry Department portfolio and the Rio On Pools falls, reported that, separate than the police investigations, they have requested an internal investigation into the two incidents.
