By Rubén Morales Iglesias: An early goal in the third minute of play by veteran Joel Campbell, off a cross by Jewison Bennett, held on to the end and gave Costa Rica the ticket for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The Costa Ricans are going to their sixth World Cup, this being their third consecutive participation.

Costa Rica locked the game after the early goal in Doha, Qatar, and were able to stave off constant attacks by New Zealand. The All Whites saw a Chris Woods’ goal disqualified for rough play in the first half. In the 67’, one of their men, Kosta Barbarouses, got sent off for rough play as well.

Costa Rica will play in Group E against Spain, Germany, and Japan.

For New Zealand, this was the third time in the intercontinental playoffs that they failed to advance to the World Cup.

Australia qualified on Monday in a penalty shootout over Peru after a 0-0 draw.
