By Aaron Humes: The reported arrest of Constable Alicia Trapp on assault charges against Minister Julius Espat is one of a series of recent “assaults and threats” to our democracy, according to Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow.
The United Democratic Party is holding another press conference as part of its continued outreach to the public.
Others include the appointments of Collet Montejo to head supervision of Redistricting fieldwork exercise and the return of Florencio Marin Sr as a special advisor to the sugar industry.
Barrow said that instead of talking about threats to Belize such as de-risking of banks and economic recession, the Prime Minister chose to prop up a pair of “dictatorships.”
The Government has stacked the deck with its supporters and downplayed and broken its promises, and through “bribery, victimization and intimidation” have captured Belizeans rather than address critical issues – and neither COVID-19 nor the Ukraine war is to blame anymore.
The PUP may feel they have a mandate, said Barrow, but the seeds of dictatorship and authoritarianism are in place unless Belizeans come together and stand up against it.
