Government reminds public officers that getting back full pay also means getting back their full workday

Posted: Wednesday, June 15, 2022. 2:20 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize issued a memo to public officers today, reaffirming that they will receive their full salaries again come July 1, but also their full workloads.

The memo, which came from the Ministry of Public Service, Constitutional and Political Reform and Religious Affairs, noted that, following the 10 percent salary deductions instituted on June 14, 2021, the workday for public officers was reduced by five hours per week.

“The Ministry of Finance has now informed that Personal Emoluments will be reinstated to 100% effective 1 July 2022. In this regard, effective 15 July; 2022 Public officers are to resume their normal working hours, as contained in Regulation 32 of the Belize Constitution (Public Service) Regulations, 2014,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry also reminded public officers that there must be continuous (uninterrupted) service to the public, which includes the lunch hour of 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m.

The ministry also thanked public officers for their commitment to service. The memo is in line with an announcement made by Prime Minister John Briceno back in February, that the reinstatement of full salaries will come in July, not in part or in a phased approach, but full restoration as of July 1.

Briceno said that the salary reduction came in an effort to better the country’s economic position, and while there is still more work to be done, restoring wages was the right thing to do under the new circumstances. He noted that despite warnings from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the government will restore the wages, as Belize’s economy has outperformed even the IMF’s estimates last year.
