By BBN Staff: Belize City businessman, Evan Tillett, was fined this week, after pleading guilty to causing a traffic accident that claimed the life of his cousin, Michael Andrew Young.
On June 7, 2019, Tillett was driving his SUV between miles 3 and 4 on the Philip Goldson Highway, when he crashed into a metal lamp post. Young, his passenger, received serious injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
In court on Tuesday, Tillett wasted no time in pleading guilty to the charge of death by careless conduct. The court then fined him $2,000 for the offense, and another $1, 500 to be paid as compensation to Young’s family. The fine is to be paid within 24 months, or he will face 4 months in prison for default.
The court said that several factors influenced him receiving a non-custodial sentence, including his early guilty plea and the fact that he is the breadwinner for his family.
