Murder updates: Police searching for killers in Belize, Stann Creek and Toledo Districts

Posted: Wednesday, June 15, 2022. 2:09 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: After a relative lull violence has flared again with three murders in as many days and five since the start of the month.

Following the murders of Carlton Belisle in Hattieville and Desmond Budna in Lake Independence, Belize City, a Belize City man was shot after 2 Monday afternoon. 32-year-old Carl Reneau was on Faber’s Road Extension when he was shot multiple times.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, said that while police are just beginning their investigations here, a possible motive has been uncovered. Reneau is well-known to police, having faced serious criminal charges at least four times but had no convictions.

The Commissioner explained, “We believe the one with Carl Reneau may have been gang related or could also be retaliation for previous incidents that he had with the law and so we have some suspects we are looking at likewise, but again it would be difficult unless people who are around would speak, but you heard the interview of the family member yesterday, how they described him to be a bad, bad, bad man. At least that’s an honest one, he [did] not try to cover the behaviour of the now-deceased. But as we have always said before, every life lost is a significant loss to a family and so we will do our best to find out who is responsible and try to bring them to justice.”

But neither Kevin Michael Brown, 70, nor Robert Michael Coote, 31, were known to be bad men, yet both ended up being shot to death in San Antonio, Toledo, and Dangriga Town respectively. The former appears to have been a robbery gone wrong according to the Commissioner: “From what investigators are seeing or what investigators saw on the scene it would appear to be a robbery gone wrong and the place was ransacked and several items were missing including the deceased’s license shotgun and so there are persons that we are looking at with the hope that we’ll be able to get some positive leads to be able to solve this murder in [San Antonio].”

The murder took place at the Browns’ property, The Farm Inn, described as “an organic farm in a breathtaking Jungle setting located in the rainforest at the foothills of the Maya Mountains.”

As for Coote, a suspect has been identified, the Commissioner said: “Police quick response led to the detention of an individual who we believe is the suspect. He was also found to be in possession of a pistol, 9mm, which we believe is the murder weapon and so officers are now working to put the pieces together where that murder is concerned, and hopefully, … we should be able to charge this individual.”

ComPol Williams also mentioned that officers are preparing for expected retaliation.
