By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Extension officers from the Belize District Agriculture Department on Wednesday visited farmers in Lucky Strike in the Belize District to show them “how to make bio fertilizers and bio insecticides from commonly available material around the household and farm”, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

Lucky Strike is Belize District village next to the Altun Ha Mayan Site off the Old Northern Highway.

Extension officers Abimael Puck, Andy Che, Noel Ramos, and Vicente Tuyub, with the support of the Department of Co-operatives and Resilient Rural Belize carried out a demonstration session, using materials such as black pepper, garlic, soap, ashes, molasses, habanero peppers, yeast, and various plants to make insecticides and fertilizers.

“The session is part of an initiative to show farmers how to lower costs and substitute chemical fertilizers the world of agriculture is used to,” said MAFSE.

“Organically grown foods command higher prices and are better for the environment. Minister Jose Abelardo Mai has recently been very vocal in supporting the substitution of fertilizers, which are sky high in price due to the war in Ukraine and global shipping crisis.”

Farmers were shown how to make a fertilizer known as a Bokashi mix consisting of fermented layers of biodegradable organic materials.

MAFSE said that similar sessions will be conducted countrywide as part of their campaign to teach farmers how to produce their own fertilizers and insecticides.
