Allan Pollard named new Deputy Mayor; Mayor Bernard Wagner backs ex-deputy to come back stronger and discusses political ambitions

By Aaron Humes: On Wednesday, Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner confirmed that the Belize City Council caucus ratified Micah Goodin’s resignation letter and elected Allan Pollard to a second term in the post.

Goodin faced calls for his resignation, which he initially resisted, after public criticism and police investigation of an incident that spiraled out of control at a night spot where he was in May, resulting in a shadow councilor being grazed by a bullet during a shootout. His announcement of his resignation has now been ratified, but according to the Mayor, removal from office is up to the voters: “The Councilors essentially ratified Micah Goodin’s resignation letter that he sent to us late yesterday evening, and we had to ratify it obviously, given that he was the sitting deputy mayor. They unanimously ratified and accepted his resignation as deputy mayor. We can’t remove him as a Council member. The people decide that and so we leave it up to the people. Our Council is really satisfied with the results, but we remain focused and we want to move ahead rather than look behind. Councilor Pollard is now the new deputy for the Council again. This is his second term serving as a deputy mayor.”

But the Mayor held out hope that Goodin can right himself and become better: “I believe that time heals everything. And it gives Councilor Goodin the opportunity to step back. All of us during our course of life have met challenges and sometimes it hits you in the face and it gives you an opportunity to step back and reflect, do some introspective work on yourself. I’m certain that the test at hand for Councilor Goodin is a necessary test and I believe that out of this he will become a better person.”

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor will join Prime Minister John Briceño in Rwanda this week for a summit on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, and Councilor Stephanne Hamilton will act as Mayor in their absence, unlike when the Mayor held on to the reins of power while away in the aftermath of the Newtown Barracks incident.

As for future plans, the Mayor has confirmed he will be stepping aside from municipal politics ahead of the next municipal election due in 2024, and potentially setting his sights on the Albert Division, where he would be going up against firstly caretaker Paul Thompson who was narrowly defeated twice by UDP incumbent Tracey Taegar-Panton, and then Taegar-Panton herself if he is successful in an general election match. But he indicated that Thompson is aware of his interest and that any decision will take a backseat to the ongoing redistricting exercise.
