By Aaron Humes: The Golden State Warriors claimed their seventh National Basketball Association (NBA) title with a 103-90 victory in Boston tonight over the Boston Celtics, their fourth since 2015 and first since 2018.
The Warriors were only two years removed from the worst record in the NBA due to long-term injuries and last year were eliminated in the playoff round.
Sharpshooter Stephen Curry claimed Most Valuable Player (MVP) honours in the Finals for the first time, as the Warriors won their second game of the series on the notoriously tough home court of the Celtics, who were denied an 18th banner to move ahead of their rivals the Los Angeles Lakers.
Coincidentally, the Warriors are the second team to close out an NBA Finals series in Boston after the Lakers did so in 1985.
Boston had won three potential elimination games in prior rounds, but was done in by 23 turnovers and superior shooting from the Western Conference side, which went down 1-0 and 2-1 but won critical games to take a lead in the series that they would not relinquish.
The Celtics got out to the early lead they needed after losing Game 5, but the battle-tested core of the Warriors – guards Curry and Klay Thompson and forward/center Draymond Green – stepped up when needed, augmented by the defense of former first draft pick Andrew Wiggins and young guard Jordan Poole with 15 points off the bench.
The NBA Finals returned to its traditional June date for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic erupted in 2020, when the season was halted and resumed in a “bubble” atmosphere in Orlando, Florida. The league was officially celebrating its 75th anniversary which occurred in 2021.
