Belizean Kirk Elrington takes gold in triple jump at U-18 Central American Athletics Championships in Nicaragua

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Kirk Elrington won Belize’s second gold medal at the U-18 and U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua, Nicaragua, on Friday.

Elrington won gold in the U-18 triple jump measuring 13.76 metres beating Honduras’ Jesus Torres by 0.20 m and El Salvador’s Jorge Montano by 0.21 metres. Montano had been leading from the first jump, but Elrington and Torres took him out with their sixth jumps.

Elrington felt satisfied with his achievement.

“Good, but I had to work for it,” Elrington said when Belize Athletics Association president Deon Sutherland asked him how he felt about his gold medal

“I was the underdog for the whole thing until the last jump.”

He said he was now ready for the long jump scheduled for 9:15 am on Sunday.

“Will take the gold for that too,” he said confidently.

Earlier Mia Sylvester had won Belize’s first gold medal at the U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in discus with a throw of 40.85 metres. She beat Guatemalan Karla Núñez by 4.61 metres and third place finisher Nerea Prieto of Honduras by 13.56 metres.

Eleven Belizeans are competing at the regional championships.
