By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mia Sylvester hurled the shot put 13.75 meters, setting a new Central American record at the U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua, Nicaragua, on Friday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Sylvester captured gold in the discus with a throw of 40.85 meters which was 4.61 meters farther than her closest competitor Guatemalan Karla Núñez. She beat third-place finisher, Nerea Prieto of Honduras, by 13.56 meters.
In the record-setting shot put event, Sylvester bested Núñez (10.28m) by 3.47 meters and Prieto (9.13m) by 4.62 meters.
Sylvester made her record throw in her fourth attempt of six. Even her first and shortest throw of 11.17m would have gained her the gold medal.
Belize got another gold medal on Friday through the efforts of Kirk Elrington in the U-18 Central American Athletics Championships’ triple jump. Elrington jumped 13.76 meters, winning over Honduras’ Jesus Torres by 0.20 m and El Salvador’s Jorge Montano by 0.21 meters.
Eleven Belizean athletes are competing in the XXIX U-18 and XXIV U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua. The games conclude on Sunday.
