By BBN Staff: There have been ongoing land issues at the Ministry of Natural Resources since the new Johnny Briceno Administration took office in Belmopan. Among those are the consistent complaints of duplicate land titles. This happens when 2 or more persons are given titles to the same land. In many cases, the complainants then request compensation for the property.
During an interview with News 5 this week, Minister of Natural Resources, Cordel Hyde said that his ministry is spending a lot of time wrestling with these cases.
Minister Hyde noted that the government recently settled a case that was 50 years old. In that case, a grandchild that is about 60 years old settled with compensation from the government. Hyde added that the-then government had acquired a piece of land from the family in Ladyville and they waited years for compensation.
The Minister further stated that in Southern Belize, another family is suing the government for 17 million dollars in a similar case.
