By BBN Staff: A 51-year-old Ladyville resident has begun a three-year, five-month prison sentence, after being unable to pay a $10,000 fine for a previous conviction of drug trafficking.
Edison Humes, appeared in court on Thursday, charged with being in possession of a pipe for the consumption of drugs. He immediately pleaded guilty and was fined $500 plus $5 cost of court which he was ordered to pay by September 30.
Everything seemed to have been concluded until the issue was raised that Humes had a $10,00 fine from a December 2020 conviction for drug trafficking in connection to five pounds of marijuana police had caught him with.
Court records showed that Humes had not made a single payment towards the fine, and he was told that he would need to pay at least $5,000 towards his fine or he would be in default. He could not pay, so his sentence began on Thursday.
There was also a bench warrant issued for Humes in connection with a charge of burglary, which he had not been showing up to court for. That case was adjourned to August 29.
