Mia Sylvester wins gold medal in discus at the U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Nicaragua

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mia Sylvester won Belize’s first gold medal at the U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua, Nicaragua, on Friday morning.

Sylvester won the gold in discus with a throw of 40.85 metres. She beat Guatemalan Karla Núñez by 4.61 metres and third place finisher Nerea Prieto of Honduras by 13.56 metres.

“Amazing, a huge personal best for me,” said in a brief interview with Deon Sutherland, president of the Belize Athletics Association.

“I’m ready for the second event, I hope all goes well .. I should be able to produce again.”

Sylvester improved her personal best by 3.96m as her record was 36.89m.

Sylvester will also be competing in shot put (4 kg) on Friday at 5:00 pm. Her shot out personal best is 14.41m.

Sylvester is one of eleven Belizean athletes competing in the XXIX U-18 and XXIV U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua.
