By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) named Toronto as one of the FIFA World Cup 2026 host cities.
Toronto Mayor John Tory and partners celebrated the announcement and recognized the work of the City of Toronto and partners to distinguish Toronto within the selection process.
FIFA said that Toronto along with Vancouver and 14 other cities in Mexico and the US will host the World Cup.
Host cities that get to experience a part of the 32-day tournament benefit from significant economic, cultural, and community opportunities.
Host cities’ profiles are also highlighted on the world stage.
FIFA World Cup 2026 will be the first in history to feature 48 teams and to be held in 3 different countries.
Toronto’s deputy mayor, Michael Thompson says that the city welcomes the qualifying teams and the global audience the World Cup attracts.
Toronto is the 4th largest city in North America with a population of over 2.9 million people.
