By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now authorized the use of Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children as young as 6 months.
But, vaccines are not being rolled out yet since the US Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) need to vote on whether to recommend them. That vote is scheduled for Saturday.
Parents and medics had been waiting for a vaccine to protect younger children.
The Moderna vaccine is now authorized for use in children 6 months through 17 years and Pfizer/BioNTech’s for children 6 months through 4 years.
FDA authorities say that they believe the vaccines will give younger children protection from the severe outcomes of COVID-19.
Health experts have called this announcement a “milestone” to bring down the age range of the vaccines to provide protection for younger children.
