Belize wins 5 medals, 3 gold, 2 silver, on Day 1 of the U-18 and U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Nicaragua

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize won 5 medals, 3 gold, and 2 silver, on Friday, the first day of the  U-18 and U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua, Nicaragua.

Not bad for Team Belize, which with only 11 athletes, has the smallest contingent at the regional championships.

Mia Sylvester captured gold in the U-20 shot put and discus. In the shot put, she set a new Central American record with a 13.75-meter throw. Her discus gold was won with 40.85 meters hurl.

Kirk Elrington claimed the other gold medal in the U18 triple jump. His jump was measured at 13.76 metres.

Joas Mejia also won silver in the U-20 triple jump measuring 14.10 meters.

Glenford Williams closed the day for Belize on Friday with the silver medal in the 100m clocking 11.28 seconds at the U-18 Championships.

The XXIX U-18 and XXIV U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua continue on Saturday. The games conclude on Sunday.
