Health Officials: 2 New Subvariants Are Fueling a Rise in COVID-19 Cases

Posted: Saturday, June 18, 2022. 9:00 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Health experts around the world are concerned over 2 new COVID-19 sub-variants, BA.4 and BA.5.

The sub-variants were first identified in South Africa and could soon become the dominant strains in Europe and the United States.

Health officials are closely monitoring the sub-variants as a number of rising infections could be attributed to them.

In March, the World Health Organization (WHO) added the sub-variants to their monitoring list.

At this time, health experts are unsure of how hard countries will be hit especially since in many countries, COVID-19 restrictions and precautions have been relaxed.

Thus, it appears that the sub-variants are spreading easily and a new wave of infections could mean more hospitalizations and more deaths.

The best advice for the public is to get vaccinated to gain protection against existing and emerging variants of COVID-19.
