Outbreak of intestinal illness reported in North Korea

Posted: Saturday, June 18, 2022. 10:09 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The official news agency of North Korea reports that leader, Kim Jong-un has ordered quarantine measures following an outbreak of an intestinal illness.

The report noted that medicine was sent to Haeju city for patients suffering from the “acute enteric epidemic”. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) lists the disease as being spread by contaminated food or water and direct contact with an ill person.

At this time, health experts believe the illness could be typhoid or cholera.

The nation is in a state of emergency after millions of people were experiencing “fever”, believed to be untested Covid-19 cases.

The country has not yet reported the number of people affected by the latest outbreak.

Over 70 people have reportedly died as a cause of the outbreak, the government said.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that they fear the situation could be much worse.
